Hypor BBQ Battle 2017

It was a beautiful day at Pavan Park just outside Lethbridge, with the mercury hitting 31 degrees and a nice breeze cooling things down. Attendance topped 190 including Hypor customers from across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Montana. Hypor technical support people from as far away as Ontario and other industry people from across the prairies also joined in – including special guests, Paul and Ryan Riese. For many, the highlight of the afternoon was the BBQ Battle – eight animal nutrition companies competed for the title of Best Pork Ribs in Alberta (as judged by a panel of three taste testers – Ralph Miller, Paul Riese, and Emily Miller). In the end the team from Connect OnFarm (Calvin Ginter, Wes Friesen, and Cleuza Friesen) came out on top with some truly phenomenal ribs. The trophy winning ribs began with a hand crafted dry rub with 9 different ingredients and a homemade BBQ sauce with 15 different ingredients. They were then smoked for 4 hours until perfect.

Thanks to all who came out and to the sponsors who with out their support the day would not have happened. •

Alberta Pork Hosts Porkapalooza and Spends Time at Calgary Stampede

Kudos to Alberta Pork for hosting the 4th Annual Porkapalooza BBQ Festival. Even the cooler soggy weather could not dampen the spirits of those in attedence.

There were 37 KCBS BBQ Competition Teams on site, food and retail vendors plus a food stage where I watched Elyse Chatterton tie sausages at a amazing pace.

Of course had to have some pork ribs too. They were awesome.

Kudos also to entire volunteer team and those from Alberta Pork on site for the 10 days at the Calgary Stampede to answer questions. This is a great opportunity to show “city slickers” the ins and outs of our business. Adults and children alike could be heard commenting on the live sow and piglets and the “teenagers” (weaners) as the sign put it. I overheard one guy laugh and say “that will do pig that will do..”. So yes a great opportunity to connect and share why we do things the way we do.

I was surprised how many pork ribs were available from all over Canada and the US at the Stampede, home of Alberta Beef. Go Pork !!

Even saw Ralph Tuck, part of the volunteer team and Christina Carley from Alberta Pork.•
